旋转编码是用于检测旋转角度及其衍生机械参数的一类传感器，包括速度和加速度等，可检测旋转、直线等传动运动。由于应用广泛，现代旋转编码器可见于诸多机械与自动化工厂中。
绝对值编码器可以为每个轴位置提供一个绝对的码值。特别是在位置控制中，绝对值编码器减轻了控制器的计算任务，并且降低了其他附加的输入部件的成本。
此外，在电源启动后或者电源故障，不需要参考驱动，可获得当前的准确位置。并行编码器是通过几根电源线传输数据而串行编码器是通过标准的接口和协议来传输数据。
绝对值编码器的多种类接口：Parallel Interface；SSI-Interface；AS-Interface；CAN；DeviceNet；Ethernet；PROFIBUS和 PROFINET。
ENA58IL系列是内部采用非接触式采样，且具有高精度的编码器。
