背景抑制传感器适用于要求传感器能够检测到非常接近反射背景的目标的应用项目。在目标和背景有类似的反射率（例如，从目标返回传感器的光线反射率大致等于从背景反射的光线反射率），或要对照更明亮、有更多反射的背景检测较暗目标时，这种背景抑制尤其有效。
