在自动化领域，光电传感器总体上提供了所有快速和非接触式监测的好处。在标准传感器中，对射传感器，反向反射传感器，漫反射传感器这三种功能性的原理上之间有区别，取决于功能和相对位置。
漫反射型光电传感器特别容易安装，因为只有传感器要被安装，也不需要反射板。这些传感器主要工作于短距离，具有较高的开关精度，能可靠检测到很细小的物体。带有背景抑制功能的传感器只在传感器前方特定区域内感应到目标物，传感器会忽略在这个区域以外的物体。背景抑制传感器对于背景区内的物体不敏感，仍有较好的精度。带背景分析的传感器经常用于在检测范围内有固定背景下的应用，用这个固定的背景可以对齐或者调节传感器。
漫反射型光电传感器原理是一种集发射器和接收器于一体的传感器，当有被检测物体经过时，物体将光电开关发射器发射的足够量的光线反射到接收器，于是光电开关就产生了开关信号。当被检测物体的表面光亮或其反光率极高时，漫反射光电开关原理是首选的检测模式。
背景抑制传感器适用于要求传感器能够检测到非常接近反射背景的目标的应用项目。在目标和背景有类似的反射率（例如，从目标返回传感器的光线反射率大致等于从背景反射的光线反射率），或要对照更明亮、有更多反射的背景检测较暗目标时，这种背景抑制尤其有效。
ML100系列有如下特点：外型小巧、集成了全金属螺纹安装孔。所有型号均配有一个可见的红色发射LED。这一特点大大方便了光电开关的安装和正确运行。由于拥有高亮度的LED指示灯，从各个方向均能轻易的观察到光电开关的开关状态。
