在自动化领域，光电传感器总体上提供了所有快速和非接触式监测的好处。在标准传感器中，对射传感器,反向反射传感器，漫反射传感器这三种功能性的原理上之间有区别，取决于功能和相对位置。
反射板型光电传感器发射器和接收器被安装在一个壳体中，所以这类传感器安装比较简单。在对面放置一块反射板并用传感器进行与之对齐。标准型的反射板传感器内部增加了偏振滤波片，能实现远距离的可靠检测，即使是高光泽的物体。带透明物体检测功能的反射板型传感器可用来稳定检测透明目标物。
ML100系列有如下特点：外型小巧、集成了全金属螺纹安装孔。所有型号均配有一个可见的红色发射LED。这一特点大大方便了传感器的安装和正确运行。由于拥有高亮度的LED指示灯，从各个方向均能轻易的观察到传感器的开关状态。
