AS-Interface 的主要特性：拓扑机构灵活: 树形,星形,线形等；便于集成到高层总线 (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet. ProfiNet ….)；有支持PLC板卡系列的扫描器；穿刺技术便于安装连接；自动识别替换的子站。
带网关功能的主站控制着AS-interface系统并且在标准化的I/O映射中传输过程数据到所有类型的高层控制中。在这个控制器中,AS-interface充当了常见的I/O卡角色，它能简单地转变到AS-interface系统。
这个不锈钢网关/主站管理与从站的通讯并通知PLC，所发生的故障。所有现场I/O和安全系统的诊断信息可以被传输到一个更高层的控制系统。集成安全监控器的主站的安全逻辑既可以通过安全PLC来设定也可以通过组态软件VAZ-SW-SIMON +来设置。
网关和扫描卡是AS-Interface系统的“心脏”, 将各种I/O模块的输入输出信号 传送给上层PLC。
带有PLC功能的网关可以用于那些高效率快速响应的工艺流程控制. 也就是说网关可以被用作单机控制的PLC。
AS-Interface网关是底层I/O级别设备和高层总线 （比如Profibus, DeviceNet 或者EtherNet等总线系统）之间的接口模块. 因此, 网关可以被看作是对于高层网络的可配置有大量分布式I/O的一个节点。这使得AS-Interface成为高层总线解决复杂繁琐并且广泛分布的输入输出信号采集的一种理想方案。比如:Profibus；Ethernet (包括 EtherNet/ IP, Modbus/TCP 和 PROFINET)；DeviceNet；CAN Bus；CC-Link和Modbus。
