甚至是最小的模型也是适用于大范围的测量和定位任务。它的工作采用激光三角测量和模拟输出。所有其他VDM的传感器使用脉波测距技术，提供较长的感知范围，可以达到及其请准的测量结果。PRT使用高强度的光脉冲来提供高度的操作可靠性， 甚至可以在诸如暴露在外的灰尘光源的恶劣情况下。
测距传感器的工作原理主要方式：
三角反射原理型：
非接触测距的第一种方法，主要通过接收器上感应接受光源的位置不同，来测量距离。此种方法常用于短距离高精度测量。相位差原理型：非接触测距的第二种方法，主要通过发射光源与接收光源的相位差△φ来测量距离。常用于中远距离检测。
时间差原理型：
非接触测距的第三种方式，主要通过发射光源与接收光源的时间差Dt来测量距离。此种方法常用于远距离高精度测距，稳定性好，环境适应性强。
