液位测量技术是化学、化工、环境和相关行业中过程控制管理的基本技术。
限值监测开关在介质达到设定高度、超过设定值或者低于设定值的时候进行切换信号。设定值(VDI/VDE Directive 3519)基于安装高度。
导电液体的很普遍。一旦液体达到固定高度的电极时，液体使两个电极（或者容器与电极之间）之间的DC自由交变电流电路闭合，电流的突变产生一个开关信号。可以很好的检测酸、碱和水溶液。非抗腐蚀材质的探头不能检测强腐蚀性液体。易燃液位如燃料、汽油和溶剂是非导电的，不适用于该测量原理。
两个电极被安装在受检测的导电液体表面，当液位上升到一定位置两根电极接触到液体，导通的继电器通过两根电极和液体产生一个开关信号。液体最小导电率必须为10μS/cm。这些情况下除了纯溶剂外，必须是典型的导电液体，如水、酸和碱。 如果需要多个开关点，就用相关的多杆电极。为避免液体中的电气影响，被测电流用无直流信号的交流电，这由电极开关放大器或变换器产生。分界面液位检测用这种方法测量既经济又方便，特别是用于原油和汽油分界面，水和非导电液体分界面。
